We have heard: “Love is patient, Love is kind” and only think of mankind, but what if we take into account what we also know: “God is love.” Now add: “Love is patient.” God is patient with you. And what of “Love is kind”? God is kind to you.
Love. Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your mind soul and with all your mind…this is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it: Love your neighbor like yourself. All the Law and Prophets hang on those two commands” Matt. 22:37-40.
1 Corinthians 13 is the famous “love” chapter and it has been the role model of man’s love towards one another. But have we taken into account that God first loved us, in such a way, that we are to love Him in like manner?
Love Is Patient.
Are you patiently waiting for God (to give you His best), as He once waited for you to answer His call? He was quite patient. We should extend the same patience towards Him.
“Blessed are those who wait upon the Lord” Dan. 12:12 “with the patience of Job” James 5:11 “Also,(having patience) toward all men” 1Thes. 5:14.
We are to have patience in trials. “For tribulation creates patience; and patience gives experience; and experience brings hope; and hope does not fail” Rom 5: 3-5.
“(This is) the patience of the saints” Rev 14:12. “Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield” Ps. 33:20
“Be still and know God will fight for you” Ex. 14:14. Love God with all your heart and wait upon His timing.
Love Is Kind.
“Do unto others (His creation), as you would have them do to you” Luke 6:31. “Be gentle towards every man: apt to teach, patiently” 2 Tim 2:24
“The merciful man does good to his own flesh” Prov. 11:17.
“Remember mercy when you are wrathful” Hab. 3:2
Jesus said, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” Matt. 5:7. Love God with all your heart and be kind to one another, as He has been kind to you.
Love Is Not Envious.
Even the prophet “Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry (at God’s compassion towards Nineveh)” Jonah 4:12.
“Wrath kills the foolish man, and envy slays the silly one” Job 5:2.
“I was envious at the foolish when I saw the prosperity of the wicked” Psalm 73:3.
Within a parable, the workers protested: “‘But, these men were hired last, working only one hour, while we worked all day and received the same pay’” Jesus said, “the last will be first and the first last” Matt. 20:16. Explaining this meant that all who believed in God’s gracious gift, whether for a lifetime or the very second of death, received the same mercy and salvation.
“The Lord is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away His Face for you if you return unto Him” 2Chron. 30:9.
Love God with all your heart and be not envious towards others, and especially not towards His Sovereign mercies.
Love Does Not Boast and Is Not Proud.
“Pride brings destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” Prov. 16:18.
Isaiah said, “How Satan has fallen from heaven…cast to earth…(Satan) once said, ‘I will raise my throne above the stars of God…and make myself like the Most High.’ But you are brought down to the pit…They stare at (Satan) and say, ‘Is this the MAN who shook the earth and made the world a desert, overthrowing cities?’” Isaiah 14:12.
Jesus agreed, “I saw Satan fall from heaven” Luke 10:18.
Love God with all your heart and be not proud in your own right; the battle is the Lord’s. Even in battles, truly anything the Evil One can throw at you, is won by the power of God; so, boast not. Your only pride is in God’s Power. “The Lord your God, He fights for you” Josh. 23:10.
Love Is Not Rude or Self Seeking.
“Even Christ pleased not himself” Rom. 15:3. “Whoso ignores the cries of the poor, he shall cry himself” Prov. 21:13; Matt. 25:42.
Jesus said, “He who loves his life will lose it.” And “Whosoever will be great among you, let him minister to you” John 12:25; Matt. 20:26.
“By love serve one another” Gal. 5:13.
Jesus also said, “If you do only good to those who do good to you, how is any different than what the sinners do?” Luke 6:33.
Remember though, “For it is God who works in you TO WILL and TO ACT according to His right purposes.” And “It is not by works, but by grace you have been saved; so let no man boast except in God…” Eph. 2:7-8.
Love God with all your heart, boast only in Him, and do good.
Love Is Not Easily Angered, and Keeps No Record of Wrongs.
“God will not harbor His anger forever; He does not treat [our*] sins as we deserve.”
“…removing them as far as the east is from the west—this is how far He has removed our sins from us.” ((*our: those who respect God.))
“As a father has compassion on his children…for He knows how we were formed, so the Lord has compassion on those who respect Him…those who keep His covenant and remember to obey His precepts” Psalm 103:9-18.
Rather than a record of wrongs, for the Beliver, He keeps a record of our anguish: “I have seen your tears” Isa. 38:5; 2Kings 20:4.
“You collect all my tears in Your wineskin—are they not listed on Your scroll?” Psalm 56:8.
Love God with all your heart and be not easily angered, nor hold grudges.
Love Does Not Delight in Evil.
“To depart from evil is understanding” Job 28:28.
“God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgement” Job 34:12.
So, “To respect the Lord is to hate evil” Psalm 98:10.
“Abstain from all appearance of evil” 1Thess. 5:22.
Jesus said, “You can not serve both God (and the world’s ways)” Matt. 6:24. “(Those who) are luke warm, neither hot nor cold, (He) will I spit out of (His) mouth” Rev. 3:15-16.
“You can not drink from the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils” 1 Cor. 10:21.
Jesus said, “This is an evil generation; they seek a sign (rather than just believing)” Luke 11:29.
Remain firm as David, “I have not done evil by turning from God” Psalm 18:21. Love God with all your heart and be not and do not compromise good standards. Speak up against what God calls “evil”.
Love Rejoices In Truth.
“His truth endures forever…Thy Word is True from the beginning” Psalm 100:5; 117:2; 119:60.
“God is True” John 3:33.
“Love the truth and peace” Zech. 8:19.
“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us…and we make God out to be a liar…If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us, and purify us from unrighteousness” 1Pet. 1:8-10.
In fact, “…the punishment that brought us peace was upon (Messiah), and by his wounds we are healed” Isaiah 53.
Jesus said, “To this end I came into the world: to bear witness to the Truth…I am the way, the Truth, and the Life” John 18:37; 14:6.
“It is the Holy Spirit of God that bears witness, because the Spirit is Truth” 1John 5:6.
“Behold a white horse; and (Jesus is) he that sat upon it, was called Faithful and True” Rev 19:11.
“(Messiah) was pierced for our transgressions…For we all like sheep have gone astray…He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence nor was deceit in his mouth…. Isaiah 53:5-9.
Love God with all your heart and rejoice in knowing the Truth.
“Love Always Protects, Always Trusts, Always Hopes, Always Preserves. Love Never Fails” 1Cor. 13:8.
Protect His Word, as He entrusted it to us.
Trust in His Word, as we Trust in Him.
Hope never fails; such is our faith: proofs unsee; not necessary.
Preserve the truth of love: “This is love: not that we loved God, but that God loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins…We Love because He loved us first” 1John 4:10, 19.
Practice Love and One Day we’ll see God’s perfect Love.
